Mbeya Region Commissioner Hon. Amos Makalla has criticized the behavior of the people in invading the road reserve by doing humanitarian activities to cultivate trade and create illegal housing in the city.
Opening a Regional Road Board session. Makalla said that roads law does not allow citizen to perform such activities within the road reserve area that is 30 meters from the center of the road on both sides
Hon. Makalla has urged citizens to stop stealing and removing road traffic sign and saying that he will not tolerate and give in to those who make it easier for them to do so.
With Regional Manager of TANROADS Engineer Paul Lyakurwa said the existence of many business and agricultural activities alongside the sidewalk, particularly the areas of Uyole, Kiwira and Ushirika threatens the safety of road users and road tunnels.
Engineer Lyakurwa has asked for the relevant authorities in the presence of Political and District Leaders to manage the people from doing business activities on the road reserves because the law does not allow such activities.
At the same time, Mr Makalla has asked Councilors to provide adequate cooperation to the Rural and Urban Rural Agencies (TARURA) by continuing to set priorities for road construction and bridges in their areas.
Speaking at the meeting, Makalla said the Region has a great prospect and resolution in addressing the challenges of the roads facing the Council, and therefore councilors and directors should assist the agencies in fulfilling their responsibilities.
Mr Makalla said the Government intends to see good road construction and bridging management, good financial spending and implementing projects in line with the funding provided for rural and urban roads.
TARURA Regional Coordinator Engineer Dustan Kishaka said the main focus of the introduction of TARURA is the provision of sustainable services for the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of rural and urban roads based on business, cost effectiveness, cross-border issues (environment, security and social issues) for sustainable social and economic development.
Mbeya Region has been allocated Tshs. 13.687 billion for road repairs for the budget year 2017/2018
